What lead Curtis to his career in mental health counseling?

Curtis received his Bachelor’s degree in Child and Family Studies from Weber State University and a Master’s in Social Work from the University of Utah.

What work experience and populations does Curtis serve?

Curtis recently retired after 34 years in religious education, working with youth and young adults on the Wasatch Front and in the Midwest.  He also spent time working in youth corrections, as a contract provider for LDS Family Services and hospice care.  He enjoys working with youth, young adults and adults of all ages.

What areas does Curtis specialize in?

Over the years, Curtis has served in several leadership roles and positions in his religious organization.  He has overseen youth programs and programs involving individuals and families.

Curtis enjoys working with youth and adults who are seeking help with anxiety, depression, relationship complications, religious issues, life transitions, career transitions, life disappointments, relationship difficulties, as well as those seeking ways to find inner strength and resiliency to move forward with life experiences.

Curtis uses an eclectic approach in treatment using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) as a core modality but infuses a variety of other modalities in treatment including Solution-Focused, Person-Centered, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing and Gottman Methods when they align with the client’s needs and goals.  He believes it is important to meet clients where they are.

What techniques do I use to achieve my own positive mental health?

I believe that everyone deserves to be happy and enjoy life.  For me, this has come as I spend time with family and friends.  I have also found joy and fulfillment in my faith and when I am helping and serving others.

My hobbies, interests, and fun facts about me:

I enjoy spending time with my wife, children and grandchildren.  I often have said to people that my hobbies and interests have been “whatever my kids are doing”.  I enjoy all sports, traveling, the outdoors and spending time at home relaxing.  Over the years, I have enjoyed coaching youth sports in competitive and non-competitive leagues.

My therapeutic approach and philosophy:

“I believe that people are strong and have the ability and resiliency to do incredible things.  Life is full of challenges that can be difficult to overcome.  It is my hope and desire to help individuals find or renew their strengths to overcome any challenge that they may face.  Life doesn’t get easier or more forgiving, but we get stronger and more resilient as we overcome the challenges we face.  My therapeutic approach to mental health treatment is that every individual is deserving of respect and has a strong sense of self-worth.  Everyone deserves a happy and meaningful life.”
