What led Carlee to their career in counseling?

Carlee attended Utah Tech University where she met some professors who strongly impacted her decision to become a marriage and family therapist. One particular professor would discuss the importance of a strong family unit and secure relationships and how these are preventative when it comes to future problems (especially in adolescents and teenagers). This led Carlee to seek further education in counseling.

What work experience and populations does Carlee serve?

Carlee has always enjoyed working with adolescents and teenagers. She spent a short amount of time working in residential treatment with troubled teenage girls as a youth mentor but really connected with her Chinese students as a certified English ESL teacher. Carlee taught English for 5 years and strived to build rapport with her students while helping them pass their English tests.

What areas does Carlee specialize in?

Carlee has spent over 4 years working with clients with various degrees of depression and anxiety. She works well in this population because of her own family background. Carlee also enjoys working with couples and has completed her level 1 and level 2 Gottman’s Couple’s trainings.

What techniques do I use to achieve positive mental health:

As someone who has struggled with anxiety since middle school, I have learned to identify my feelings, feel those feelings, and let them go. I cannot control every aspect of my life and am learning to love the imperfections that make my life my own.

My hobbies, interests, and fun facts about me:

I am very passionate about physical health. I love setting new goals like getting yoga certified, running a 5K, a physique competition, or a Spartan race. I also enjoy spending time outdoors with my husband and my two daughters (with another one on the way). We love traveling, camping, swimming, and hiking.

My therapeutic approach and philosophy:

Know your thoughts and feelings so that they do not control you. Only you are in control of who you are and who you want to become.

Is Carlee Wallace on Psychology Today?

Yes, she is. Read more about her Here.

At what time in your life did you decide to become a therapist?

I decided to become a therapist during my undergraduate degree. I was taking a criminal profiling class for fun, and my peers were asking my professor, who went from being a police officer to a marriage and family therapist, why he changed degrees. He said that he saw each client as a movie where you do not know the story, but know that it is going to have a good ending. I love people and love sharing/creating hope in clients that life can and will get better.

What experience inspired you to become a therapist?

Without getting too deep, I have past experiences where I did not have support and really struggled with relationships and mental health. I hope to provide clients with the support I lacked during the different seasons of my life, especially my teenagers and young adults.
