So how does connection impact us and our lives?

Throughout the human experience, there can be times when we feel we have a lack of connection with friends, family members, and our community. This feeling can contribute to various mental health struggles, including but not limited to depression, anxiety, trauma, and ADHD, making these struggles seem even heavier to work through.

So how does connection impact us and our lives?

In so many ways, feeling a connection with various individuals/groups can positively impact us by decreasing symptoms of anxiety, feeling empathy toward others, emotional regulation, and even increasing self-confidence. Fostering connections with others can be one of our greatest skills in life. Feeling connected in relationships can deepen the bond, and provide emotional support, companionship, love, and much more. Now, as with any skill we have, there are some risks involved. The benefits outweigh the costs here.

Some things you can do to help yourself build and foster connections with others might include reaching out to an old friend, trying to spend more quality time with the people in your life, and getting out of your comfort zone. A personal favorite, however, is exploring your vulnerability in your relationships. When you allow yourself to be vulnerable in a relationship, a common result is the strengthening of the relationship and the connection that is there.

Taking a risk and being vulnerable can encourage the other human(s) in the relationship to do the same. This is a difficult tool to utilize. As Brene Brown says, “Vulnerability sounds like truth and feels like courage. Truth and courage aren’t always comfortable, but they’re never weakness.”. Exploring any of Brene Brown’s work could be another tool to take advantage of, as she works with shame and vulnerability. There are podcasts, books, and other resources at your fingertips.

If working on connections by yourself feels like you’re getting nowhere, or maybe feels too overwhelming, then it might be time to reach out to a professional for some assistance. Gold Counseling has therapists on staff in several locations who are ready to help. They can help in a variety of ways, including individual therapy, couples therapy, family therapy, and group therapy.

And remember, just because something feels uncomfortable doesn’t mean that it is unsafe or a weakness. You have so much strength. Connections are waiting for you.
